In a bold and emotionally charged address at the Amissa Service for the founder of our Church, Rev. Samuel Bilewu Joseph Oshoffa, one of the church’s top-ranking authorities, M/S/E Nunayon did not mince words as he delivered a stern rebuke aimed at those he believes are tearing the church apart from within. Celestial Church of Christ, founded in 1947 has grown to become one of Africa’s most prominent indigenous churches. Yet, like many large spiritual movements, it has also grappled with challenges of leadership, succession, and unity.
Speaking to a packed congregation at the church’s National Headquarters in Makoko, Lagos State on the 10th May 2025, the third-highest authority in Church hierarchy expressed concern over the state of unity and discipline in the church, describing internal sabotage as one of the greatest threats to its legacy.
He said “If you stand against order, against doctrine, and against peace in the house of God, then you are not a reformer — you are a destroyer,” M/S/E Nunayon said emphatically. “You may dress in white, hold a title, and stand on the altar, but if your actions sow division, you are a destroyer in Celestial Church of Christ!”
M/S/E Nunayon further preached that Papa Oshoffa left us a foundation of holiness, humility, and heavenly vision,” M/S/E Nunayon continued. “Anyone who undermines these values is not preserving his legacy — they are desecrating it.”
His remarks, though not directed at anyone by name, drew a wave of murmurs, applause, and solemn reflection from attendees, many of whom interpreted his words as a call to conscience for those involved in ongoing disputes and leadership struggles within the church.
While M/S/E Nunayon comments have sparked debate among members, many are praising his courage and conviction. A number of senior shepherds present nodded in agreement as he spoke, while others looked visibly stirred by the weight of his words.
This year’s remembrance service was not only a tribute to the past but a stern reminder about the responsibility of the present.
