IS IT “WATCH-NIGHT SERVICE” OR “NEW MOON SERVICE”?

A Call for Doctrinal Clarity on the Monthly Crossover Service in CCC

Celestial Church of Christ has, from its foundation been guided by a body of doctrines, ordinances and established practices that have distinguished the Church from other Christian denominations. These practices were not ceremonial traditions; they were understood by generations of members as part of the spiritual heritage handed down from the Founder and the early members of the Church.

It is therefore important that whenever there is a change in the terminology, procedure or interpretation of an established Church ordinance, such a change should be properly explained and documented by the appropriate Church authorities. Where no clear explanation is provided, confusion may arise among members, particularly among those who have been familiar with the original practice for many years.

One of the services that deserves such clarification is the monthly crossover service observed in our church. For generations, Celestial members have understood the monthly crossover service as a special service associated with the beginning of a new month. The service has traditionally been observed at the appropriate time stated every Thursday of each month, with members gathering in the presence of God to pray, worship and commit the new month into His hands.

The uniqueness of the service is not simply in the fact that it takes place around the transition from one month to another. It is also connected with the spiritual significance attached to the service and the manner in which it has historically been conducted within the Church.

The Church Constitution remains an important reference point in discussing such matters because it provides members with an official framework through which established practices can be understood. Where provisions of the Constitution refer to particular services or ordinances, members naturally expect those provisions to be respected and properly interpreted.

WHERE DID “NEW MOON SERVICE” COME FROM?
This brings us to an important question:

At what point did the expression “New Moon Service” become the accepted name for what earlier generations of Celestial members knew as the “Watch-Night Service”?

The question is not intended to create unnecessary controversy. Rather, it is a legitimate doctrinal and historical question that deserves a clear answer from the appropriate Church authorities. If “New Moon Service” is an officially approved designation, when was it formally introduced? By whom? Under what authority? Is there an official circular, constitutional amendment, doctrinal publication or directive establishing the change?

These questions are important because terminology in a church is not always insignificant. The name given to a service can influence how members understand its purpose, history and spiritual significance. If the original Church documentation identifies the service as Watch-Night, while the expression New Moon Service has subsequently become widespread without a clearly communicated official explanation, then the Church has a responsibility to clarify the matter.

Celestial Church of Christ has a rich heritage of doctrines and ordinances that were handed down from the Founder and preserved by successive generations. Where a practice is to be changed, reinterpreted or given a new name, the process should be transparent. Church members should not be left to discover doctrinal changes simply because they have gradually become common in different parishes.

The expression Watch-Night carries a particular spiritual meaning. It speaks of vigilance, prayer, waiting upon God and entering into a new period under His presence. The service should therefore not become merely another routine programme on the Church calendar. It should remain a sacred occasion through which members collectively acknowledge God at the transition of time, pray for divine guidance and commit the days ahead into His hands.

The emphasis should be on God and the spiritual purpose of the ordinance not on human invention, convenience or terminology that has not been adequately explained.

A Church ordinance should remain a treasure of the Church when its meaning, history and purpose are properly preserved.
